Designing Light

I shot this award winning photo for Greet Bedford Magazine. The subject of this cover photo is Carly Feins, a baker who is on the spectrum. Carly is not only an amazing baker, but she also advocates for neurodiversity and neurodiverse women.

According to Carly, “Desserts are my canvas, and I'm in the business of creating art pieces that you can eat!”

She makes customized cakes to order. Check out her website at Carly’s Custom Cakes.

For this image, I wanted a soft, high key look. I loved the kitchen backsplash as a background and wanted to keep the image very soft and inviting. I bounced one light off the ceiling to mimic window light. We started off photographing Carly decorating her cakes, and then moved on to blowing flour around. The winning shot had a lot of flour in it the air, giving an ethereal haze over the scene.

When creating a great image it’s important that the light defines the person in a way that tells their story.
